Apple Watch App and Rehabilitation

Canberra-based surgeon introduces Australian-first research project to aid with patient recovery after total knee replacement.

Canberra’s Dr Brendan Klar using a robotic-assistant for a TKR. He was the first surgeon globally to complete 350 robotic-assisted cases.

Canberra Knee Clinic is launching an Apple Watch App program for its patients.

Starting March 2020, Dr Brendan Klar will be offering a personalised follow-up for all his knee replacement patients through the Apple Watch program and app.

The app is the first collaboration between the world’s biggest wearable tech company, Apple Inc., and the orthopaedic industry, aimed at improving the patient care journey by helping them to recover after their orthopaedic surgery.  With a simple and easy to use interface, the MyMobility app will help keep patients connected and informed through customised notifications, video tutorials, to-dos and reminders from Dr Klar.

Some of the key potential benefits of the app include:

  • Direct communication with the Canberra Knee Clinic team through messages, reminders, and surveys
  • Remote monitoring
  • Personalised interactive exercises
  • Shorter hospital stay post-operation
  • Track overall recovery progress

Patients taking part in the program will be empowered to get home from hospital faster, safe in the knowledge and confidence that all they need for a sound recovery is contained in their Apple Watch and iPhone app. Secure encrypted messaging between you, the patient, and our team at CKC will enhance the communication pathways like never before. This will be a game-changer for our patients Dr Klar believes…being able to ask a question of Dr Klar and his team or have a concern addressed promptly all via the app rather than waiting for a callback or holding off until your next appointment will revolutionise patient satisfaction and engagement.

The data set that the Apple Watch and iPhone collects will be monitored by your CKC team to make sure you are on track for a great recovery. If you fall behind, we can reach out and offer assistance earlier than ever before because of the monitoring systems built into the app. Instructional exercise videos combined with timely educational material and clever reminders will help patients stay in control.

Combining Robotic Surgical Assistants with the Apple Watch App, this technology will empower Dr Klar’s patients like never before we hope. Time will tell.

For more information, please contact the CKC team to learn how this app can help transform the post-operative patient journey.
